Greene junior pitcher Olivia Kennedy has been named Class C Player of the Year, leading Section 4 picks on the 2021 all-state softball team as chosen by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports.
Kennedy was one of nine first-team all-state picks from the section, including five in Class C. She pitched four no-hitters and helped Greene advance to the Section 4 Class C semifinals. There were 40 overall all-state picks from Section 4.
Rijo, a sixth-team all-state pick as an eighth-grader, has verbally committed to play at the University of Virginia. She helped the Hawks to back-to-back sectional titles this season. There was no state tournament.
Earning first-team honors from sectional runner-up Elmira Notre Dame were sophomore catcher Lawson Bigelow and sophomore shortstop Ava Mustico. END sophomore pitcher Olivia Switzer was a second-team pick.
Greene senior standout Olivia Kennedy quieted the Elmira Notre Dame bats and gave an early boost to her team's offense Saturday afternoon in a 4-0 victory in the Section 4 Class C softball championship game at the BAGSAI Complex in Binghamton.
\"It means the world to us,\" Kennedy said of the sectional crown. \"We've been busting our butts the entire season. This was our goal the entire season and to finally accomplish it and work together as a family and as a team, it's just incredible. To see how far everyone's progressed and to see us all work together is just awesome.\"
Last year Notre Dame's season ended with a 5-2 loss to Deposit/Hancock in the Class C sectional final. Deposit/Hancock moved back down to Class D this season and rolled to a 19-4 victory over Roxbury in Saturday's championship game.
Section 4 is one of the eleven sections of the NYSPHSAA. It is made up of high schools from around New York's Southern Region and is based in Sidney, New York. The schools in the section compete with each other in athletic competition.

The allegation consisted of a SUNY Binghamton assistant softball coach, who had a daughter on the team, participating in an official Vestal practice. Jennifer Petteys is listed an an assistant coach of the Binghamton softball program, while Caitlyn Petteys is a member of the Vestal High School team.
Troy Record staff attempted to verify the suspension, but Vestal Athletic Director Josh Gannon, NYSPHSAA softball director Dr. Jim Wright and Section 4 softball coordinator Ed Swartout did not respond to a request for comment.

Saratoga Springs may have entered sectional play with a losing record, yet its tournament play showed the squad truly is made up of winners and earned the honor of representing Section II in the Class AA state playoffs.
Saratoga Springs secured the program's first sectional title since the Blue Streaks captured the 2000 Class A championship in the Buffalo area. This season's squad was making the first trip to the final for the program since 2006.

The City of New York requires that all youth baseball and youth softball leagues playing on ballfields in City parks must have an AED device and a trained responder made available at every league game and practice. Youth baseball and youth softball leagues found to be in violation of this practice will be subject to warnings, fines, and denials of future permits.
