The overall effectiveness of autoregulated load prescription was high in this systematic review. Additional research is required to determine the effectiveness of autoregulated load prescription in populations with varying baseline strength. Further, additional research is warranted to determine whether additional benefits of autoregulation for strength adaptations can be realized through the design of load prescriptions based on lower levels of muscular strength.
This review supports the conclusion that autoregulated load prescription is a feasible method for prescribing loads for persons with low levels of muscular strength. In the studies in this review, participants were able to effectively determine their own load prescription. Future research should investigate the impacts of individualized versus standardized load prescriptions on performance and injury prevention.
Our systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that autoregulation of resistance training load prevents muscular overload and risk of injury. Autoregulated load prescription is more effective than standardized load prescription at preventing muscular overload, as demonstrated by the mean differences in the one-repetition maximum strength adaptations.
