Vélez Sarsfield, Talleres(! ) and – confirmed after we finished recording – Estudiantes are Argentina’s three representatives in the last eight, but they’ll have to fight their ways past five Brazilian sides to taste glory. In this week’s HOP, Sam, English Dan, Tony and Santi review three finals – the the Copa Diego Maradona, in which Boca Juniors beat Banfield on spot kicks, the women’s championship final, in which Boca thrashed River Plate 7-0, and the Copa Sudamericana final, in which Defensa y Justicia claimed their first major trophy (and Hernán Crespo’s first as a manager) by beating Lanús 3-0 in Córdoba.
This week, Sam and Dan look back on a weekend which saw Atlético Tucumán remain four points clear at the top of the league, a six-goal thriller in Avellaneda and both River and Boca lose. In the Copa Libertadores, the first leg of Vélez Sarsfield v Talleres was an absolute humdinger, and our listeners’ questions include one about the chances of Ricardo Caruso Lombardi catching monkeypox. This week, Sam, English Dan, Santi and Andrés catch you up with last weekend’s league action but spend the bulk of the podcast talking Libertadores, and in particular going over the eliminations of Boca Juniors, who reacted by firing Sebastián Battaglia, and River Plate, who (unsurprisingly) did not react by firing Marcelo Gallardo.
If you’re in the United States, it also allows you to watch the Copas Libertadores and Sudamericana live, and European competitions including Spain’s La Liga, via tie-ins with beIN Sports and Gol TV. In the three hundred and thirty-seventh episode of Hand Of Pod, Sam and Andrés look back on an action-packed weekend of Copa Superliga action which saw River Plate eviscerate Aldosivi, Boca Juniors breeze past Godoy Cruz on a sodden Bombonera pitch, and a hilarious – if distinctly amateur-hour – kit mixup at San Lorenzo v Argentinos Juniors, among plenty more. We also look forward to a weekend which contains the first legs of the quarter-finals and a last-weekend title decider in the women’s Primera, as River Plate host UAI Urquiza on the final day knowing one team will emerge from the match as champions.
In the penultimate Hand Of Pod of 2019, Sam, English Dan, Tony and Andrés review a round of Superliga action – the last before the summer break – in which most of the title hopefuls dropped points, not for the first time. In the three hundred and thirty-eighth episode of Hand Of Pod, Sam, English Dan and Andrés discuss three quarters of the Copa Superliga quarter-finals … but not three quarters in that way; three quarters in the other way. Two of the ties conclude after this episode goes online, so previewing the semi-finals is tricky, but we are able to look at Argentina’s preliminary squad lists for the Women’s World Cup and the men’s Copa América, among other things. HOP is sponsored by Fanatiz. Fanatiz allows you to watch the Argentine Superliga and the Copa Argentina live or on demand, as well as offering TyCSports International and other premium South American sports channels to viewers outside Latin America.
We also looked at the other drama from the weekend just gone … which was almost none, because continental spots and relegation won’t be decided until the end of the Copa Superliga group stage (if indeed that goes the distance). We also discuss the current situation regarding next season’s league system for the top flight. You can follow HOP in various ways. We have a Facebook page, and a Twitter page. You can subscribe on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher or TuneIn. And if you’d like to help support the pod financially, you can find us on Patreon.
We also look at Vélez Sarsfield’s 3-1 win over Rosario Central in the participation final of the Copa Maradona, which sets up a playoff against Banfield on Wednesday for a spot in next year’s Copa Sudamericana. This week, Sam is joined by English Dan, Tony and Andrés to look forward to Sunday evening’s Copa Diego Armando Maradona final between Boca Juniors and Banfield (and at how they got there) and to review Boca’s and River Plate’s eliminations from the Copa Libertadores. In this week’s Hand Of Pod, Sam, Andrés and Tony look back on the drama of Boca Juniors’ title win, as the Xeneize pipped River Plate on the last day to win their third Argentine championship in four seasons.
Vélez Sarsfield – Hand Of PodThis week Sam and Santi look back on both Copa Libertadores semi-finals, one of which was rather more dramatic and closely fought than the other, and preview Sunday’s superclásico at the Bombonera. We also discuss a tightening title race, as Atlético Tucumán have picked up just one point from two games since we last recorded, allowing Gimnasia to go dead level with them at the top of the table. You can subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher or TuneIn.

This week Sam, English Dan, Andrés and Tony are visited by listener Tommy to discuss a week of action that’s seen Atlético Tucumán remain top of the table with an unlikely chasing pack, and Vélez Sarsfield emerge as the only Argentine (and indeed non-Brazilian) semifinalists in this year’s Copa Libertadores, after they beat Talleres pretty comfortably over two legs and Estudiantes got hit by the mother of all sucker punches from Athletico Paranaense.
