Classic Shell gives you options to change some of the looks and functionality of Windows. You can replace the Windows 7 startup bubble with the Windows XP one. You can add the buttons that show the start menu, install any programs you choose, open empty folders, open file and folder windows, show the desktop, show the desktop with icons only or with tiles. You can change the way that File Explorer displays folders, files, drives and partitions. You can change the background and fonts. You can change the way that documents, videos, pictures, movies, and music come up automatically when starting a file, folder or drive. You can show the user folder and documents, pictures, music, movies, videos or printers on the desktop. You can customize the ribbon of the start menu and add gadgets. The start menu can be either the old style or the Windows XP start menu style.
The easiest way to understand Classic Shell is to consider the program as an upgrade to the Start menu that adds a whole lot of customization options. You can use it to change the color of the buttons that trigger the features in the Start menu. You can change the color of the Start menu itself. You can change the color of files and folders. You can add more buttons or pre-define the customizations you make. You can use it to replace the Windows 7 type of start menu with a Windows XP start menu. I've never used it because I don't need those and the fact that it will not be found in the Start Menu.
